The Internal Revenue Service released a new Tax Tip about fake tax bill notices related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA.) The scam involves fraudulent versions of notice CP2000 for tax year 2015 and may be received via email, as an attachment, or by mail.

You’ll be able to tell if you receive one of these fraudulent notices if –

• The CP2000 notice is ‘issued’ from an Austin, Texas address;
• The letter states that the issue is related to 2014 coverage under the ACA;
• The payment voucher lists the letter number as 105C;
• You’re requested to make your check payable to I.R.S. and send it to “Austin Processing Center” at a post office box.

The Internal Revenue Service notice makes clear that the IRS does not initiate communication with taxpayers by email or social media. It also indicates that an authentic CP2000 notice provides complete instructions about what to do if the taxpayer agrees or disagrees with the additional tax due. Additionally, a real notice will request that checks be made out to “United States Treasury”, not ‘Internal Revenue Service.”
